We are joined by the Asyla Ensemble on period instruments for a performance of the second of Jan Dismas Zelenka’s Missae Ultimae (an unfinished cycle of six mass settings of which only three survive).
Completed in 1739, the Missa Votiva was written as thanksgiving after the Czech-German composer’s recovery from serious illness. Many sections are in the Italian operatic style of the day with much syncopation and bombastic orchestral effects, but these are exquisitely balanced with more traditional evocations of stile antico (ancient style).
A recent review called Missa Votiva “nothing less than a lost masterpiece, strongly recommended for your discovery”.
