Description: | SOLD OUT some tickets available for afternoon rehearsal on the day Johannes Brahms: A German Requiem Sung in English with Royal Free Music Society Barnet Symphony Orchestra Elinor Jane Moran soprano Angus McPhee baritone Deeply moving and profound, A German Requiem is central to our understanding of Brahms’s compositional personality and spiritual life. Behind its dramatic gestures and 19th century grandeur, it reveals Brahms’s obsessions with folk-songs and the music of the past. The libretto, assembled by Brahms himself from the Lutheran Bible, makes for a personal reflection with perhaps more of a focus on the living, rather than the dead. In contrast to many other oratorios of the 19th century Brahms places the choir at the heart of the work which I think makes the depiction of sorrow and consoling all the more powerful. |
