Description: Queen’s Park Singers join the Barnet Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Free Music Society in a programme of French music:
    • Lili Boulanger Pour les funérailles d’un soldat
    • Saint-Saëns Symphony No. 3 ‘Organ’
    • Gounod Messe solennelle en l’honneur de Sainte-Cécile
Lili Boulanger’s For the funeral of a soldier is her first surviving choral work. Although she was only 19 at the time, its orchestration, and use of modes display her prodigious skills that helped her win the Prix de Rome the following year.

Saint-Saëns, who was in the audience for the premiere of Charles Gounod’s St. Cecilia Mass, described “This simplicity, this grandeur, this serene light which rose before the musical world like a breaking dawn, troubled people enormously… at first one was dazzled, then charmed, then conquered.”

The Organ Symphony by Camille Saint-Saëns is universally loved for its triumphant finale (famous too from the 1995 film Babe). This finale is especially effective following the tussles of previous movements, and the long-awaited arrival of colossal organ chords - something you feel as well as see and hear.

All of our collaborations thus far have all sold out, so I hope you can join us for this special musical journey!
